Did we get rid of Slaven too early?
I know it’s all ifs and buts but Slaven seems to be doing a decent job at West Brom. We had one of our best seasons under him with a squad that on paper isn’t as good as the current team.
I always liked him and he went with dignity.
Obviously still learning but maybe a bit premature.

Maybe we employed him too early.

Just a thought.

No - it should have been much sooner

I didn't want us to get rid of Bilic, but it did get to point where I actually think it did him a favour - you could see the pressure getting to him.

There was a chance he maybe could have kept us up, but let's say he didn't - it would have been more painful and looked worse on his CV.

It seemed like he left on reasonably good terms. So, here's hoping he gets West Brom up, consolidates them and you never know, be might end up back here, sometime in the future.

Im happy for Pellegrini to at least see out his contract.

If in two years, we haven't qualified for Europe, or at least given it a good go in the FA Cup then look at someone else to come in.

Maybe, that someone else could be Bilic - time will tell.

I'd been saying for years before we hired him that I wanted him as manager, so I was well chuffed when he arrived and started to make a good job of it.
Unfortunately his last year wasn't helped at all by the snake Payet, but Slav had been making mistakes for a while; notably continually playing Antonio at right back even though any fool could see he couldn't defend.
The truth was that he should have gone 6 months earlier than he did because he wasn't getting anything right by then.

Had we stayed at UP I do believe he would have progressed from his 1st season, the stadium move threw in a new dimension. Players had to get used to the new environment, the club had to try and convince "next level" signings that our shiny new stadium meant we were going places as well as dealing with a moody c**t who wanted to leave; this would have challenged the best managers out there.

Re: Did we get rid of Slaven too early?
why would he need someone to advise him? he'd been a manager for years and played at every level.

truth is we never built on his first season, largely because of terrible recruitment and the stadium move.

We became one of the un-fittest sides in the league after being one of the fittest under Allardyce.

evidence of either point?

We became one of the un-fittest sides in the league after being one of the fittest under Allardyce. I was disappointed it didn't work out but frankly he wasn't very good and we blew two chances of European football to minnows when a run there could have attracted better players to the club.

Re: Did we get rid of Slaven too early?
He wasn't spot on at all, it was pure fantasy, and maybe Bilic wouldn't have wanted anyone 'advising' him, after all isn't he the worlds most cleverlist weverlist man?

Yeah employ a manager then employ another one with no ambition to advise the first shit manager.

Re: Did we get rid of Slaven too early?
The thing that they should have done with Slav is got someone in to help and advise him.

Someone that had been there and done it and that could show him the ropes on where he was going wrong, i.e. discipline or having plan c d and e and a bit more tactical knowledge.

It was time for him to go, but i always thought it was a shame.

i think he was an honest, decent, well spoken guy that wore his heart on his sleeve and could have been a long standing very good manager for us.

we all make mistakes in our job and go through bad times, but i felt the board cut him loose rather than try and help him.

I think with a gerrard houlier type person, not saying him, to shadow and help and support him, then he could have learnt and flourished.

Re: Did we get rid of Slaven too early?
always thought slav would do well in the championship. players don't have the same ability down there but also don't have the egos to go with it.

never got behind the idea that he was tactically inept. listening to him talk as a pundit he clearly knows his onions. though i suspect much of it went over the heads of our thick as pigshit squad.

he'd have given both bollocks for a target man with the intelligence and technique of haller.

i'd have him back to be honest, but that's because i'm a sentimental old cunt and i felt more connected to the club when he was here for whatever reason.

Re: Did we get rid of Slaven too early?
I concur with many on here, I liked him a lot but it was time to go.

That last season at Upton Park was very special indeed after a worrying start. Winning at Arsenal was brilliant but a very frustrating early European exit and 2 worrying home defeats against Leicester (who we did not know/think would end up Champions at that stage) and Bournemouth. After that it turned around and it was a brilliant time to be West Ham. It was also a time when we really got behind a manager. After the knowledge that BFS was in charge of the club we love, Avram Grant need I say anymore, Zola was odd as for many when we were doing well he was great but when it went wrong he was a Chelsea ****, Curbishley kept us up but then it was a bore fest and Pardew only really got accepted in 2005/2006.

Second season I still backed him, the whole Payet and stadium nonsense made it difficult and despite it being assessed as a really bad season we finished 13th. However it was clear at the start of 17/18 his time was done. What stood out for me was the absolute lack of game management, discipline and fight from the team. Southampton away and getting back to 2-2 despite being down to ten men, then giving away a stupid penalty at the end that cost us the game. We then had the dreadful defeats at Newcastle and at home to Brighton followed by the pure lack of professionalism at Palace. I don't like digging out individuals but Antonio cannot have been worried about a bollocking when he gave the ball away in the last minute which then led to Palace equalising. I do not like negative tactics but when your 2-1 up in the last minute, just keep the ball in the corner.

Good luck to him and Julian at West Brom.

Re: Did we get rid of Slaven too early?
The Payet situation didn’t help him at all.
The recruitment in the season we moved to the London Stadium was terrible.
I like Slav but I think WBA is his level.
Good luck to him and Julian.

Re: Did we get rid of Slaven too early?
Nah his race was run.

But I think he was royally shafted by the owners with lack of investment & having to deal with the move to the cesspit.

Re: Did we get rid of Slaven too early?
No, he deserved the sack if not earlier.
I want every manager to succeed but he is the one this century that I’ve been most disappointed to see not be able to get it right after the best season we have had in the last 30 odd years.
2015/16 was an absolute pleasure but in a way he (like many of us) never looked at home once we left Upton Park.
His refusal to change his coaching and fitness staff was a major mistake and it was all downhill from there.

The Championship is a very volatile division and one or two players can make all the difference ... he has done well to get Pereira and Diangana but like the new Derby manager he won’t have loan stars once they go back.
